Dr Bridget Maher, representing the  School of Medicine University College Cork, Ireland, won the Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Award GP category 2013 for the CLAS mobile application.  The app is an itemised checklist and scoring system  to help medical students and junior doctors write better discharge letters.  The app is part of the Erasmus-funded PATIENT project and will be translated into Spanish and German.
The Awards are a partnership between MSD and NALA (National Adult Literacy Agency) with representation on the judging panel from the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), Irish Practice Nurse Association (IPNA), UCD,  General Practice and NALA. The media partner to the awards is Irish Medical Times.
Health literacy involves a person being able to understand basic health information whether they receive it in writing, in person or over the phone. It also involves a person having the knowledge to understand their options and make informed decisions about their own health.
