The Welten Institute

The Welten Institute is a research centre for learning, teaching and technology of the Open Universiteit of the Netherlands (OUNL). The Welten Institute focus on innovation of higher education, by research into teaching methods, development of new learning technologies and by supporting implementation of new concepts and technologies. The Welten Institute carries out implementation projects, both inside the OUNL and with external partners from education, the wider public sector and the private sector.

Role:
The OUNL will share its expertise across several aspects of the project, in particular the assessment of the skills and competencies to be targeted by PATIENT, as well as the development of specific learning outcomes, and educational materials associated with the planned module. This work will build and elaborate upon work completed in previous FP7 EU-funded project HANDOVER. HANDOVER developed a new approach for teaching and learning required knowledge and skills regarding medical handover procedures.

University College Cork (UCC)

University College Cork (UCC) is a world-class research-led University that plays a key role in the development of Ireland’s knowledge-based economy. The research strategy of UCC is focused on creating major centres of excellence for world-class research and is closely aligned with key Government policies including the Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (SSTI), Building Ireland’s Smart Economy and the Report of the Innovation Taskforce.  The School of Medicine at UCC has developed a substantial expertise in professional learning and behaviour in the form of a research-active academic unit Medical Education Unit (> 20 academic staff) with special interests in professionalism, inter-professional learning and simulation-based training.
Role:
UCC will share its expertise across several aspects of the project, in particular the assessment of the medical skills and research needs to be targeted by PATIENT, as well as the development of specific learning outcomes associated with the planned module and the practical implementation of the module in their University. This work will build and elaborate upon work completed in an internal handover project called CLAS that developed a mobile application for medical students, interns and hospital doctors to improve the quality of handover communication, in particular, hospital discharge letters.

AIXTRA, RWTH Aachen University

The Medical Faculty of RWTH Aachen University runs the so-called “Modellstudiengang”, an innovative, module-based medical curriculum for teaching and learning medicine at the university hospital. In line with the change of curriculum, AIXTRA was founded to give medical students the opportunity to learn, train and optimize practical and social skills  is a high-fidelity simulation centre.

Role:
AIXTRA will share their expertise in development and implementation of new learning concepts as well as their practical experience concerning everyday work-life in the clinic. They will provide facilities to properly realize implementation strategies of the HANDOVER Toolbox, the CLAS, and other mobile application by contributing rooms for pilot studies, simulations and student seminars, patients cases and technology equipment; human resources. Various procedures can be tested in their applicability and effectiveness.

Avedis Donabedian Institute

The Avedis Donabedian Institute is a Research Institute on Quality & Safety in Health Care of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, a non-profit organization that supports quality efforts in Health and Social Care in FAD since 1989. The board includes among others; the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Spanish Society for Quality, the Spanish Society of Health Economics and the Spanish Federation of Health Managers. The institute has implemented quality projects in more than 400 centres and various regions and develops and tests quality indicators for scientific societies and implements clinical guidelines at different levels.
Role:
Avedis Donabedian will share their expertise in development and implementation of new learning concepts as well as their practical experience concerning innovation of clinic processes for improved patient safety. Avedis Donabedian was a partner in the FP7 ‘HANDOVER project’ where they contribute need analysis and state-of-the-art review of handover challenges of the medical system in Spain. Furthermore, they are running an national project called ‘E-Pract’ (http://www.e-pract.net), a professional online network of Spanish speaking medical professionals, that aims to overcome pressing issues in medical procedures in a faster manner. Avedis Donabedian will support the proper implementation of the HANDOVER Toolbox and the CLAS mobile, and other new mobile applications by organizing rooms for studies, simulations and seminars, patient cases, required technology equipment, and human resources.

MT Consulting GmbH

MT Consulting GmbH is a SME company founded in Germany that supports their clients by implementing, consulting, developing new innovative knowledge management tools for their infrastructure. MT is therefore focusing esp. on health and care sector by implementing e-learning and other knowledge management tools to innovate organisational workflows. MT takes advantage of existing open source software solutions that save time and money for the clients to offer customised solutions. MT offers support for Content-Management Systems, Learning-Management Systems, Social Software strategies and customised software for specific requirements.
The role of the SME partner MT Consulting in the PATIENT project is to maintain and customise the HANDOVER Toolbox, the online teaching environment, and provide additional educational material. In addition, MT will contribute to the dissemination activities by setting up and maintain the project website. Furthermore, MT who is experienced in commercialisation and exploitation strategies will develop an exploitation strategy for the HANDOVER Toolbox and the handover study module based on a market analysis and commercialisation pathways for medical trainings of other organisations.
